This past weekend, I decided to try out phone banking for a politician.
Now, it wasn’t my best decision since I’m already crazy busy, I know. But, seriously, this was such an amazing experience. Here’s why.
First off, I’m not one to hang out with adults. I love all people younger than me. I mean I obviously don’t hate people older than me, but they do make me a little uncomfortable. I’m working on this, I swear.
The phone banking was to reach out to adults, which was my first fear. I mean, what would they say if a teenager picked up the phone and randomly called 50 year olds in Florida. Did I mention that the phone banking was Florida? (Btw, I’m from Texas, for those of you new to my letters!")
Anyways, it wasn’t horrible to be honest. I mean, there was an old man who picked up and told me to never call him again, which makes sense. No one likes these political calls. Most of the other calls went to messages.
Another thing I was extremely afraid of was calling the male older people. I feel crazy, and I’m not trying to stereotype or anything. It may be an irrational fear, but for some reason, I feel like they’re going to yell at me.
If you don’t know I did have a — umm— negative experience with an old man across the street, which I’ll save for another day.
Regardless, the whole experience was just SCARY.
Despite the fear, I know that I made the right decision. Even though some people were mean, pushing through and talking with a smile was so important. I learned that everyone is different, and it’s important to not shy away from experiences that get you communicating with new people, regardless of age.
This goes with any opportunity. Turning it down because you’re busy is one thing, but turning it down because you’re scared– that’s a whole other subject. Don’t let your fears get in the way of an opportunity for personal growth.
This weekend I learned how to talk to strangers, even when they’re unwilling to talk to you. I learned that it’s important to always be positive, regardless of the situation. I learned how to phone bank, and more importantly I learned the value of phone banking.
Much love,
